What is an AI agent, and how is it different from a chatbot?

A chatbot answers. An AI agent works. It receives a goal, such as "qualify this inquiry" or "process this order", decides the next step within your rules and uses tools to do it: it reads an email, searches the CRM, checks stock in the ERP, drafts a reply and creates the record.
