Does your company really need a custom AI model?

Often not. Most business tasks, such as answering questions from contracts, manuals or policies, work well with an existing model that looks up your documents at the moment it answers. This is called retrieval. Your data stays in your storage, is always current and can be updated without retraining anything.

A custom model makes sense when retrieval reaches its limits: a narrow task that must be done the same way thousands of times, strict rules that data may not leave your premises, specialist vocabulary a general model keeps getting wrong, or predictions from numbers rather than text.

Retrieval, fine-tuning, private LLM or ML model: which fits?

• Fine-tuning - an existing model is trained further on your examples, so it follows your format, tone or classification rules consistently.
• Private LLM - an open-weight language model runs on servers you control, in the UAE, in the EU or on-premise, so prompts and documents never reach a public AI service.
• Custom AI/ML model development - classic machine learning trained on your tables: demand forecasts, lead scoring, anomaly detection in transactions or sensor data.
• Combinations - for example a private LLM with retrieval, or a forecast model whose results an agent explains in plain language.

What does custom AI/ML model development look like in practice?

Example: a spare parts distributor in Jebel Ali Free Zone wants to know which items will run short next quarter. A general language model cannot answer that. We train a forecasting model on sales history, lead times and seasonal patterns such as summer and Ramadan, and show the result in a dashboard the purchasing team already opens every week.

Example: a firm holds a large archive of Arabic and English contracts and wants each new contract sorted by clause type. Retrieval alone gives uneven results, and the data may not leave the building. A smaller model, fine-tuned on examples your lawyers labelled and running on-premise, does this one task reliably and is checked against a test set before launch.

Where does a private LLM in the UAE run, and who controls it?

Data residency is agreed before anything is built: where training data, the model and the prompts are stored, who can access them and how long logs are kept. Hosting options are servers in the UAE, servers in the EU, or your own infrastructure on request. The blueprint also states who holds the trained model and the training data.
